Using the power of breath to calm the mindfeatured

The breath of life.

Our very own existence begins with our first breath at birth. Throughout our life we engage in breathing every second. Breathing encompasses every part of our life. It helps to provide nutrient oxygen to our bodily organs to help sustain life. Breathing also influences our state of mind.

The breath is a reflection of ourselves. Have you been in a situation where you were feeling stressed or anxious? Your breath becomes more rapid and your heart beats faster. This is example of the flight-or-fight response.

In yoga we can use our breath to counter that response. By taking slower, deeper breaths you can slow your heart rate, reduce the feeling of stress and anxiety.

How do you use breath in yoga?

1) Before you begin your yoga practice. Find a quiet area on your mat. You can do this sitting up or laying down.

2) Close your eyes. Breathe in and breathe out a couple of rounds.

3) Start bringing awareness to your breath. Is your breath deep? Or is it shallow? Is it slow? Or is it fast? Stay here for a few minutes engaging in your breath. Can you try making your breath smooth and steady. How do you feel? Do you feel calmer?

Once your breath is smooth and steady you are ready to start your yoga practice. One method to help you incorporate breath work in yoga is to breathe before you transition to a new pose.

By practicing conscious breathing it creates a mind-body connection to give you the power to control your breath to calm the mind.
